history

On September 25, 1919, an association was founded with the aim of building a church . In 1920 the eastern part was separated from the parish of St. Marien and became a rectorate. The elevation to the parish took place in 1923.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the church took place on June 28, 1921. The construction company was the Düren company Kabza. The inauguration took place on May 21, 1922 by Pastor Beckers from Hochkirchen , who was then dean of the Düren dean's office . The church stood opposite today's church on the site of the current St. Josef children's home. In June 1924 the church received an organ from the Klais company in Bonn . Due to the strong growth, another church was required. It was set up in a barn of the old barracks on today's extended Wewordenstrasse. A separate parish ( St. Josef (Düren) ) was set up here later .

After the destruction in the Second World War , the parish church was rebuilt at its current location according to the plans of the Würzburg architect Albert Boßlet . After the groundbreaking on July 8, 1951, the consecration took place on May 11, 1952. In 1953, the residential building next to the church for the pastor and the pastor's office was completed. In 1958 a tower clock was installed. In October 1964 the organ was installed . This comes from the Dutch organ builder Verschueren , Heythuysen. The organ has 31 registers divided into the main work, swell , positive and pedal . The hexagonal sacrament house made of bronze and rock crystal from 1980 was designed by the artist Albert Sous .

The parishes of St. Anna, St. Marien, St. Bonifatius, St. Josef, St. Cyriakus and St. Antonius merged on January 1, 2010 to form the new grand parish of St. Lukas.

In April 2012 it was announced that the church and the rectory were to be sold or used for another, church-related use.

In November 2012 it was announced that the church would be converted into assisted living apartments. Part of the church is to be preserved as a sacred space. However, this option was not implemented.

In autumn 2014 there was great resentment. The church was supposed to take up the skater park from Brusseler Strasse during winter. This request was rejected by the parish.

In 2015 it became known that four kindergarten groups will be set up in the building. The last service took place on January 7, 2017. In this the church was desecrated. After that, the conversion to the “San Pedro” daycare center took place from August 2018. Completion is planned for January 2021. Since then, services have been held in the former baptistery.
