The Church of St. Michael is the Roman Catholic parish church of the Düren district of Lendersdorf in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The Catholic Chapel of St. Hubertus in Kufferath is a subsidiary of the parish of St. Michael.

Building history

A church is mentioned in Lendersdorf in 1222. The original part of the church was built around 1500 over a previous Romanesque building. Processed stones from the previous building were used, which are still clearly visible from the outside today. In 1843 part of the tower collapsed , whereupon it was decided to extend the church by two bays and to build a completely new tower. In 1883 the church was richly painted in a neo-Gothic style. A baptistery and an entrance area to the west and north of the tower were added in 1889. The original part of the church is in the Gothic style , the new building in the Neo-Gothic style. The addition of a sacristy on the north side and a functional room opposite on the south side took place in 1929. Around 1935, the neo-Gothic painting of the church was painted white. Between 1950 and 1972 the pulpit and communion bench were removed, the latter being used as a parapet for the organ stage. In 1995–99 the interior and the windows were extensively renovated, revealing the painted painting from 1883 and probably earlier. Parts are now visible again. In 2010, the neo-Gothic interior painting of the entrance area under the tower was reconstructed.

Furnishing

High altar by Benedikt Dreyer, 1525

The parish church has a three-wing carved altar by the Lübeck master Benedikt Dreyer with paintings by the master of the Lüneburg washing of feet from around 1525, one of the most important works of art of this kind in the Rhineland . When the church tower collapsed in 1843, the altar was badly damaged. The Aachen artist who was supposed to restore the altar expanded two groups of figures and replaced them with duplicates. The originals are now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City . In the spring of 1940 the former high altar, which was dismantled in 1734, was restored. The reliefs and the statue of Michael were exhibited for the first time in the Leopold Hoesch Museum . The museum director at the time was very committed to the restoration of the altar. That not just two, but all four wing reliefs are copies of the 19th century, was only established in 1979/80 when the sculptures were examined in the workshop of the Rhineland State Conservator. The church is a three-aisled basilica made of rubble stone with a five-winged choir and two original side bays. The cross vaults inside have rail ribs.

The following inscription can be read on the lintel of the side gate on the north side: “Let us remember with Christian love those who, as true Maccabees , were ready to die for their fatherland. Their names are engraved deeper in our hearts than in stone ”, next to them are two stone tablets set into the wall, on which the fallen soldiers of the two world wars from Lendersdorf are entered.

The irreparable organ was dismantled in February 2007 and replaced by a new one. It was inaugurated on October 21, 2007.
