Kufferath is an old farming village, characterized by agriculture, and since 1971 part of the district town of Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

location

The second smallest district is located on the southwestern outskirts at the foot of the Eifel slopes. The district borders the municipality of Kreuzau with the district of Langenbroich , the municipality of Hürtgenwald with the district of Horm and the districts of Berzbuir and Lendersdorf in Düren . The place is somewhat hidden in a valley basin.

history

As early as the Middle Ages, lead , copper , zinc and other ores were mined in small pits in and around Kufferath . From Welk, for example, a 2 km long tunnel from the Johanna mine led through the valley. It was not until the end of the 19th century that mining stopped. In 1946, large-scale lead and zinc ore mining began in the Maubacher Bleiberg open-cast mine, about 1 km away .

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the municipality of Berzbuir-Kufferath belonged administratively to the Birgel office . In the course of the local reorganization, the municipality of Berzbuir-Kufferath was incorporated into Lendersdorf on July 1, 1969. With the dissolution of the Birgel office and the municipality of Lendersdorf on December 31, 1971, Berzbuir-Kufferath and Lendersdorf came to the city of Düren on January 1, 1972.
