Berzbuir is a rural district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . The “ui” in the second syllable is pronounced like a long “ü”.

The place with about 500 inhabitants is located southwest of Düren on the eastern slopes of the Eifel . There is no through traffic through the town. The distance to the city center is 7 km.

The small place lies on a geological cone. This means that you can see far into the Rhenish Plain from Berzbuir, with a clear view as far as Cologne .

The highest point of the place is at the Berzbuirer Knipp at 215 m above sea ​​level .

history

Many underground water veins allow the conclusion that this (well) was one of the criteria for the choice to build a place here on the ridge. Stone Age finds suggest a very early settlement. Roman settlements have also been excavated here.

The name Berzbuir appears for the first time in baptismal registers after 1770. Before that, the place was called "Benzberg", "Bertzbur", "Bertzbeur", "Bertzberg" and "Berzberg". The place name could be interpreted as a rural settlement of the family "Berath" = Berz .

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the municipality of Berzbuir-Kufferath belonged administratively to the Birgel office . In the course of the local reorganization, the municipality of Berzbuir-Kufferath was incorporated into Lendersdorf on July 1, 1969. With the dissolution of the Birgel office and the municipality of Lendersdorf on December 31, 1971, Berzbuir-Kufferath and Lendersdorf came to the city of Düren on January 1, 1972.
