Düren-North
Düren-Nord is an inner-city district of the district town of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .
Düren-Nord, also called Norddüren, is separated from the city center by the Cologne-Aachen railway line . The local roads lead through two tunnels under the railway line. That is why the district is popularly known as “Henge de Bahn” (behind the railway). In the west it is delimited by the Rur and in the east by the Bundesstraße 56 . In the north, the development flows into Birkesdorf . This district was largely spared from the heavy bombing on Düren on November 16, 1944 . That is why many Wilhelmine buildings are still preserved. Between 1976 and 1987, entire rows of houses were demolished as part of an area renovation. The City House and the new cinema center are located in such a renovated area .
The city district was also an important traffic junction in the past. Before the construction of the federal highway 56, all traffic in the direction of Jülich or other northern locations or cities had to drive through the middle of Düren-Nord. The railway line, which was also very important for the economic upswing, was inaugurated in 1841.
Düren-Nord is a former industrial location of the city of Düren. The mill pond in Düren was important for the factories . Large companies have now been closed or relocated. People from many nations and cultures live in this district. Therefore, in addition to the parish church of St. Joachim, there is also the Fatih mosque and a youth home, which bears the significant name Multikulti and is run by the Evangelical community in Düren .
The Haus der Stadt is located directly behind the railway line and the administration building of the Eifel-Rur water association is only a few meters away . The central bus station is located between the two buildings . In turn, it borders directly on Düren train station . The location of the Stadtwerke Düren used to be where the house of the city stands today .
The railway line of the Düren Railway , which ran in the middle of the streets from 1893 to 1965 , used to begin around the site of the bus station . In the further course it drove via Birkesdorf and other villages to Inden . Today, local public transport is handled by the Düren circular path .
The LVR clinic Düren with forensics is located in Düren-Nord . The Louis Braille School in Düren , which only accepts blind and visually impaired pupils and is located on the premises of the former asylum for the blind, is in close proximity to this facility . A primary school and the nearby secondary school are available for the education of children and young people. There are other types of schools in the city center.
Düren-Nord was the location of the now closed sugar factory Düren and the Peill & Putzler glassworks . The Düren metal works , which have not existed since 1976, manufactured duralumin from which the supporting framework of the zeppelins was made. That is why all the zeppelins flew over Düren at least once. The mosque and the Endart , a cultural institution , are now located in the factory halls .
Today there is still the mechanical engineering company Brück in this district. Many medium-sized companies offer a wide variety of jobs. Small shops with foreign specialties, but also large supermarkets and furniture stores etc. have everything in their range that is necessary for daily needs. Former shops and inns have been converted into meeting places for the various nationalities.
Felix Heinrich Schoeller converted a roller mill in Düren-Nord in 1857 into the largest facility in the paper manufacturing industry in the Rhineland . Today a street name still reminds of this factory. The machine factory Banning und Seybold on Veldener Straße later became O. Dörries AG and is now known as Voith Paper GmbH & Co. KG.
The Nordlichtspiele were a 300-person cinema and were operated in the corner building at Alte / Neue Jülicher Strasse until the 1970s. Today there is a Turkish grocery store there.
The Rurtalwerkstätten operate a part of the company in Veldener Strasse where disabled people work. On this site there is a Rococo garden house from the 18th century, which has been preserved in its original state.
