Peill & Putzler
Peill & Putzler was a glassworks in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .
In 1903 the Peill und Sohn glassworks was founded in Düren. Leopold Peill , the owner at the time, was a patron for the city of Düren. For example, he donated 25,000 marks for the X-ray facility of the city hospital built in 1909. In 1947 the glassworks of the Putzler brothers' plant in Penzig in Upper Lusatia and Peill und Sohn in Düren merged to form Peill & Putzler Glashüttenwerke GmbH. The Putzler company was able to look back on many years of experience as a glass supplier for petroleum lanterns . Due to the Second World War , the production was concentrated in Düren on a 6.9 hectare site next to the then Düren sugar factory in the north of the city.
In 1950 the plant had five glass furnaces, and two more were added in the 1970s. At peak times, the glassworks was the largest employer in the city of Düren with up to 1,500 workers.
Wilhelm Wagenfeld , a German designer (1900–1990), designed lighting programs for Peill & Putzler from 1952 to 1958. Other designers who worked for the company included Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg and Helmut Demary . Peill & Putzler was also one of the founding members of the German Design Council in 1953.
In 1966 the glassworks was expanded considerably. On February 1, 1992, Peill & Putzler took over the Bärenhütte in Weißwasser / Oberlausitz . In 1994/95 the production of lamps, glasses etc. in Düren was stopped and relocated to Slovenia , Poland and the Czech Republic . In Düren only lamps were traded. In 2003 the 100th anniversary could still be celebrated. In 2004 bankruptcy was filed.
Paul Neuhaus GmbH in Werl has been selling lights that Wagenfeld designed in the 1950s under the name Peill & Putzler GmbH since 2007 .
