Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg

Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg (born January 29, 1908 in Ulm , † April 12, 1998 in Würzburg ) was a German industrial designer . As a university professor, designer, art historian and author, he made a significant contribution to the professionalization of design after 1945 .

Life

Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg learned the profession of steel engraver from 1922 to 1927 and worked in the silver goods factory Peter Bruckmann & Söhne in Heilbronn in the 1920s .

From 1928 to 1935 he studied painting at the Academy of the Arts in Stuttgart before studying art history in Tübingen from 1935 to 1938 . In 1938 he began his teaching career as a specialist teacher for arts and crafts at the vocational school in Geislingen / Steige. He received his doctorate in Stuttgart in 1939 on the subject of Christoph Scheffler , an Asam student . Contributions to his painterly work ” .

After military service from 1939 and many years of imprisonment in Egypt until 1948, he returned to Germany that year. In the same year Braun-Feldweg was appointed as a lecturer for art history, drawing and painting at the State Higher Technical School for the Precious Metals Industry in Schwäbisch Gmünd . In 1950 he took over the management of the “Design and Development of Industrial Products” class. His preferred materials were glass and metal.

In addition to his teaching activities from 1950 to 1957, he wrote a number of specialist books and from 1951 designed glasses and vases for the “Josephinenhütte” in Schwäbisch Gmünd , for the “Hirschberg crystal factory” in Stadtallendorf and WMF in Geislingen an der Steige . He also designed lights, door handles for Wehag (Wilhelm Engstfeld AG) in Heiligenhaus and cutlery for Heimendahl & Keller in Hilden . Both companies are in the Mettmann district .

In 1958 Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg moved to Berlin to the " State University of Fine Arts " and set up the chair for industrial design . He taught there until 1973. In 1976 he opened his own studio in Würzburg, where he created his late paintings.

He died there on April 12, 1998. His daughter Rita (* 1948) is married to Michael Wolffsohn .

Award

The Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg Förderpreis for design-critical texts is named after him . aimed at design students and graduates. The winners' texts are published by Niggli Verlag in the design-critical texts series.
