history

Düren has a long tradition as the "city of the blind". As early as 1845, welfare for the blind was first mentioned as the Elisabeth Institute for the Blind . After a donation from the industrialist Rudolf Schenkel from Düren, the institution was rebuilt at its current location in 1879 due to lack of space in Düren-Nord. In 1876 it was taken over by the Rhine Province and was now called the Rheinische Provinzial Blindenanstalt . The Cellitinnen von St. Gertrud worked there from 1898 to 1968 . The school in Düren worked closely with the state school for the blind and visually impaired (Neuwied) .

The artist Will Sommer taught at the school from 1953 to 1961 .
