history

Establishment of the office

On October 1, 1799, Christian Georg Engels became Birgel's “Agent de Commune” on behalf of the French Republic, to which Birgel had belonged since November 4, 1797. Since 1800 Engels had the title "Maire" (German mayor).

The Mairie (mayor's office), the administrative district created by the French occupation, included not only Birgel but also the villages of Berzbuir-Kufferath , Gürzenich , Lendersdorf , Mozenborn and Rölsdorf . She was initially referred to as "Mairie Lendersdorf", later as "Mairie Birgel". It is not known when the name was changed. The Mairie Lendersdorf or Mairie Birgel belonged to the " Canton Düren ", " Arrondissement d'Aix-la-Chapelle " in the " Département de la Roer ".

In 1815, at the beginning of the Prussian era, the “Mairie Birgel” became the “ Bürgermeisterei Birgel”, from 1927 onwards the “Amt Birgel”.

The rest of the story up to the municipal reorganization

The official building of the Birgel Office in Rölsdorf, inaugurated on January 27, 1968

In 1882 the Birgel mayor's office in Rölsdorf acquired a building. After that the administration of Gürzenich was transferred there. The building was replaced in 1968 by a new building in the immediate vicinity.

Since 1933 there have been efforts in the municipality of Rölsdorf to join the city of Düren . It was incorporated into Düren on April 1, 1937. In addition to the municipality of Rölsdorf itself, land from the municipalities of Gürzenich and Lendersdorf-Krauthausen were added to the city of Düren. The Birgel office lost 425 hectares of land and the population decreased by 2,684. The administration of the Birgel Office remained in Rölsdorf and was therefore outside the actual official area from that point on.

Municipal reorganization

On July 1, 1969, the municipality of Berzbuir-Kufferath was combined with the municipality of Lendersdorf-Krauthausen to form the new municipality of Lendersdorf. As a result of the Aachen Law , the Birgel office with the municipalities of Birgel, Gürzenich and Lendersdorf was dissolved with effect from January 1, 1972 and incorporated into the city of Düren. The former official locations have since been part of the city of Düren.
