St. Michael is a Roman Catholic parish church in Echtz , a district of Düren in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It was built between 1896 and 1898 according to plans by Franz Statz and is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Archangel Michael .

The church is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Düren under No. 8/1 .

history

The Echtz parish was first mentioned in the Liber valoris from around 1308, but the parish is very likely older. Until 1804, the parish of Echtz was much larger than it is today. Today only the branches in Geich with the Nikolauskapelle and Konzendorf with the Pankratiuskapelle belong to the parish. Until the parish was reduced in size, it included the Obergeich , D'horn branches with the St. Martinus branch church, as well as Merode and Schlich , which were elevated to the parish of St. Martinus D'horn in 1804.

Today the parish is part of the community of parishes (GdG) St. Franziskus Düren-Nord .

Building history

A church in Echtz already existed around 1300, which is also dedicated to St. Archangel Michael was consecrated. This church was replaced by a new building in the 15th century. This quarry stone building with its bell tower from 1498 was a two-aisled, four-bay building in the Gothic style with a three-story bell tower in front of it in the west and a choir closed on three sides in the east. This structure was demolished in 1898 because it had become too small for the increased population.

The new church was built between 1896 and 1898 next to the old church, which was still standing when construction began. The architect was the diocesan master builder Franz Statz . He planned a three-aisled cruciform church in the style of a basilica with a three-bay nave with a three-storey bell tower in front in the west and a two-bay, three-sided closed choir in the east. A roof turret was attached over the crossing . The consecration took place on October 9, 1898 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop and later Archbishop Antonius Fischer . On this occasion he gave relics of companions of St. Gereon , St. Ursula and St. Quirinus .

The church was very badly damaged during World War II . The tower half collapsed, destroying the vaults of the central nave. In addition, the roof turret was destroyed, as well as some tracery of the windows. This destruction made major renovations necessary, which were completed in 1952. The tower received its present appearance. The renovated church was consecrated on September 28, 1952. In 1985 the choir was repainted. The building has 160 seats and 300 standing places. The illuminated tower cross is characteristic of the Echtz Church.

Furnishing

In the interior there is the Way of the Cross from the time the church was built, as well as some figures of saints. The high altar dates from the 19th century and was placed in the choir after the Second World War. The rest of the historical furnishings were destroyed in the war.

The windows are by different artists. In 1952 Matthias Kriche designed emergency glazing for St. Michael, parts of which are still available today. In 1999 Günther Krumbach created three new windows for the north transept. In 1993, three new windows for the south transept, designed by Emil Wachter , followed. In 2006 he designed four new choir windows and in 2008 his last work in the north aisle. Two more windows were installed in 2014, this time in the south aisle. They were designed by Mechthild Bach . More windows by this artist will follow in the next few years.

organ

The organ was built by the organ builder EF Walcker & Cie. built in 1956 for the renaissance chapel of the Pragfriedhof in Stuttgart-Nord . In 1989 it was installed by Orgelbau Plum (Marbach, Neckar) - initially intended as a temporary solution - on the rear west wall of the church tower in Echtz, in order to leave the space for the choir untouched on the gallery. According to its original purpose, the organ had a corresponding disposition for funeral services. In 2008 the instrument, which had become almost unplayable, was comprehensively overhauled and reorganized by the Heinz Wilbrand Werkstätte für Organbau from Übach-Palenberg . In addition to a new technical facility being registered register some voices exchanged between the sub-stations was to achieve a coherent sound concept. Since the pipe work, especially in the basic voices, has considerable lengths for the period of origin in the mid-1950s , the sound volume in this area could be increased through professional intonation. Finally, some of the garish, time-typical mixtures were replaced by three new, more basic reed registers , which give the organ the missing power. The additional volume of sound compensates for the disadvantages of the poorly chosen location.

The combination of the newly arranged register inventory with a total of four reed registers as well as the new intonation on the one hand and the remote location in the rear part of the gallery on the other results in a tonally attractive interplay of symphonic organ sound and room acoustics. In 2020, the Schumacher company, Eupen (Belgium), created an acoustic 32 'register, which now also provides additional volume in the depth. Overall, the instrument now has a remarkable richness of sound with 22 registers on two manuals and pedal . The disposition is as follows:
