The Carmel Holy Family is a monastery of the Discalced Carmelites (OCD) in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Carmel was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the Cologne Carmel Mary of Peace . A plot of land was bought on Kölner Landstrasse in Düren and the construction of the new monastery began there in 1902. The first sisters moved into the Carmel on August 24, 1903, and on the same day there was also the possibility of a public tour of the new monastery for the population of Düren.

On August 30, the Cologne archbishop blessed Antonius Cardinal Fischer the monastery, benedizierte the abbey church and consecrated three altars why the church was not consecrated, is unknown. The monastery wall and bell tower were built in 1905. In the same year, the city of Düren gave the Carmelites the crucifixion group, which is registered as monument no. 122 in the list of monuments.

The solemn consecration ( consecration ) of the monastery church took place on August 7, 1913 by Bishop Alois Benziger from Quilon, India . The church was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . War- related renovation work after the Second World War dragged on until 1950. Because of the high number of new entrants, the Carmel in Zweifall was founded in 1955 and eight nuns moved there.

The nuns ran a wafer bakery until 1965, a parament workshop from 1965 to 1968 and a bookbindery since 1969 . In 2013, 19 sisters lived in the convent .
