Monastery of the Missionaries of the Holy Family (Düren)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monastery of the Missionaries of the Holy Family stood in the North Rhine-Westphalian district town of Düren on Friedrichstrasse .

In the 1930s, the religious order in Germany ran three mission schools , but none of them led to the Abitur. Therefore, the students had to go to local high schools and had to be housed in private apartments. Father Laurentius Claßen from Arnoldsweiler founded a house in Düren in which the students could also live.

In a letter dated September 15, 1931, the Bishop of Aachen, Joseph Vogt , authorized the establishment. On November 9, 1931, the Order bought the house at Friedrichstrasse 11, the villa of the manufacturer Joseph Bongartz, and converted it into the Bethanien Monastery , which was consecrated on April 12, 1932.

Five pupils of their own offspring initially attended high schools in Düren. 15 to 20 pupils who came to Düren from other houses in Germany could be accepted into the mission house.

In the building there were two large reception rooms, the kitchen and the chapel on the first floor . The first floor contained the dining room, the students' study, two cells and a bathroom. On the second floor there were three other cells, a guest room and a dormitory for the students. The third floor consisted of two more bedrooms for the students.

In 1936 the seat of the Pro-Provincial Council was moved from Wanne-Eickel to Düren. This made Düren the seat of the Provincial Council for Germany and Northern Norway .

The house was completely destroyed in the air raid on Düren on November 16, 1944. The missionaries temporarily stayed at the Carmelite Sisters of the Holy Family in the Kölner Landstrasse in Düren. Then they moved to their ID quarter in Birkesdorf . There they had a house with ten rooms.

On July 9, 1945, all the Fathers were back in Düren. At the beginning of 1950, the reconstruction began in de Friedrichstrasse, where the neighboring property had been added. The new building was ready for occupation on October 21, 1951. It was consecrated on August 21, 1952 by the Düren dean Joseph Adolph.

House Bonner Str. 34

The missionary power of attorney was set up on April 21, 1964 in the purchased house at Bonner Strasse 34 , the former Villa Paul Kappler. The house is a listed building . At the beginning of the 1980s, a third building was built in Kurfürstenstraße to house the provincial superior .

In 1997, the houses on Bonner Strasse and Kurfürstenstrasse were sold due to a lack of young people. Caritas bought both houses . By resolution of May 30, 2001, the Düren branch was closed. The missionary power of attorney remained in the rented building on Friedrichstrasse for another 2 years.
