The street seen from the south school into town

The Friedrichstrasse in the district town Düren ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ) is an ancient city road . It begins on Bonner Strasse and ends on Nideggener Strasse . It leads south out of the city center. Friedrichstrasse is an extension of Schützenstrasse and Hohenzollernstrasse .

On the east side of Friedrichstrasse there is a building of the former monastery of the Missionaries of the Holy Family , today Caritas . In the further course there is a primary school , the south school. Friedrichstrasse used to flow at the southern end into Peter-Josef-Schmitz-Platz, which was named after the former mayor Peter Josef Schmitz . Because of its National Socialist past, the designation was withdrawn in 1986/87. In 1987 the bus stop of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB) was renamed from Schmitzplatz back to Friedrichplatz .

history

An open stream used to flow through the street, which was diverted from the mill pond at the level of the Courtenbachhof . It served to drain the city. The brook fed the moat to the Obertor to the west and the moat to the Kölntor to the north . That is why the street was initially called "Bachstraße". On May 7, 1889, it was renamed "Friedrichstrasse".
