Peter Josef Schmitz

Peter Josef Schmitz (born October 14, 1879 in Cologne , † November 16, 1944 in Düren ) was Lord Mayor of Düren from August 1, 1933 to December 31, 1942.

Schmitz passed his Abitur in 1899 at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne. He then studied law, economics , physics, chemistry and mathematics in Leipzig, Berlin, Paris, Munich and Grenoble . In 1905 Schmitz became a trainee lawyer , in 1911 he passed the state examination.

In 1913 he established himself as a lawyer in Saarbrücken . From August 3, 1914 to April 12, 1918, he served in the First World War . So he was in the military for most of the war. In the war he made it to the rank of lieutenant . Just ten days after his military service, namely on April 22nd, he started working for the Cologne city ​​council .

Then he came to Düren on October 29, 1920 as an alderman. On December 6, 1932, he resigned from the service of the Düren city council. But he was elected acting mayor on March 18, 1933 . The provisional appointment was converted into a final one on August 1, 1933. On December 31, 1942, Schmitz left the service when he reached the age limit. Schmitz was killed in the air raid on Düren on November 16, 1944. In 1956 the southwestern part of Friedrichplatz was renamed Peter-Josef-Schmitz-Platz in honor of Peter Josef Schmitz . In 1986/87 the renaming was reversed.

His predecessor was Ernst Overhues , his successor was Walter Küper .
