Franciscan monastery Düren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscan monastery in Düren existed from the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century.

At the current location of the Marienkirche there was a church building since 1459. At this time founded Franciscan from Koblenz at this point a monastery . The construction of the monastery was supported by Duke Gerhard VII von Jülich-Berg (1437–1475) and his wife Sophia von Sachsen († 1473) as well as Baron von Merode . They consecrated the monastery of St. Mary Magdalene of Bethany . It belonged to the Cologne Franciscan Province ( Colonia ). Count Dietrich III. von Manderscheid (1459–1498) had the west wing built on his account. Over the centuries the Franciscan monastery in Düren was called “In Bethanien”.

In 1470 the monastery church could be consecrated with four altars. In 1484 the Fathers built the first hospital , the chapel of which is St. Elisabeth was consecrated. Two cemeteries and the Way of the Cross of the monastery were added, all of which were consecrated in 1507. The monastery was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1533 and the church was badly damaged. Only the west wing with the library remained. At that time the convent counted 37 people and 5 interns. After the fire, only 30 priests and 5 brothers remained in the monastery. Between 1534 and 1537 the church and monastery were rebuilt. On February 6, 1568, the convent bought a house next to the monastery. From 1616 to 1618 the office and library were rebuilt. In 1636 the monastery was enlarged by donations of houses and gardens in Philippstrasse, today Victor-Gollancz-Strasse. The houses were demolished and the monastery grounds were surrounded by a high wall. In 1670 the monastery was demolished and a larger one was built. The convent now had 14 priests, 9 students and 9 lay brothers. A new surrounding wall was added in 1713.

In 1758 the French confiscated the monastery and set up a hospital in it . The monastery was founded in 1802 by the French canceled . In 1831 the monastery church became the parish church of St. Marien, which was destroyed in an air raid in 1944 and rebuilt in 1949. Today it is the second parish church of the Catholic parish of St. Lukas.

In Düren, the street In Bethanien next to the Marienkirche and the restaurant Zum Franziskaner remind of the monastery.

In June 2018, the foundations of the Franciscan monastery were uncovered during the work to create a parking lot between the Marienkirche and Philippstrasse .
