Alexian Monastery Düren

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alexian monastery was in the Dr.-Overhues-Allee in Düren .

After the community of the Alexian Brothers with their motherhouse in Neuss acquired the property at Lendersdorfer Weg 62 (today Dr.-Overhues-Allee) in Düren in 1901, the archbishop approved the establishment of a branch office in November of the same year for the purpose of outpatient nursing and running a workers' hospice . After government approval in May 1902, the first floor of Cornely's house at Kaiserplatz 42 was rented , and later around 1910 the house at Oberstrasse 79 was also rented . The first three brothers of the convent left Neuss on June 21, 1902. More soon followed, so that the outpatient care practiced here could initially be carried out by six to ten brothers.

In the spring of 1903, the construction of their own monastery with a chapel on Lendesdorfer Weg 62 began, which was consecrated to St. Joachim on August 28, 1904, together with the chapel . The archiepiscopal authority granted the approval to accept retirees on September 6, 1904, the state authorities in 1906.

The house, whose convent consisted of five brothers in 1934, was destroyed in a bomb attack on November 16, 1944 . The brothers survived and returned to the mother house in Neuss. The convent could not be rebuilt after the Second World War due to a lack of personnel.

In 2017, the extension of the St. Nikolaus nursing home will be built on the former monastery property .
