Bernd Lange (born November 14, 1955 in Oldenburg i. O. ) is a German politician ( SPD ). Lange was a MEP in the Socialist / Social Democratic Group from 1994 to 2004; since the 2009 election he has again been a MEP in the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament . He has chaired the Committee on International Trade in Parliament since 2014 .

Life

Long grew up in Varel as the son of two independent petrol station salespeople and attended school there. After graduating from high school in 1974 at the Graf-Anton-Guenther School in Oldenburg, he moved to Göttingen to the same year at the August University Georg- trays Protestant theology and political science to study. Also in 1974 he joined the IG Metall trade union . He completed his studies in 1980 with the theological examination and 1981 with the first state examination.

During his studies, Lange was also involved in university politics. From 1978 to 1980 he was President of the Student Parliament at the University of Göttingen. 1980/1981 he was chairman of the AStA at the University of Göttingen.

After completing his studies, he taught from 1983 to 1994 as a teacher at the Burgdorf high school .

Between 2005 and 2009, Lange worked as the head of the “Economy, Environment and Europe” department in the DGB district of Lower Saxony - Bremen - Saxony / Anhalt. There he was responsible for economic and structural policy in Lower Saxony, implementation of EU structural funding, establishment of a regional trade union network with unions from the European partner regions of Lower Saxony Greater Poland, Upper Normandy and Andalusia (Union-Regio-Net).

Bernd Lange lives in the Hanover region and has two children.

Political party

Bernd Lange joined the SPD in 1974 at the age of 19. From 1983 to 1984 he was a member of the Juso district board in Hanover . From 1986 to 2015, Lange was a member of the sub-district executive committee of the SPD Hannover-Land (now the Hannover Region). From 1992 to 2013 he headed the SPD local association in Burgdorf.

Lange was a co-founder of the Science Forum in the SPD district of Hanover. For many years he was in charge of the discussion group “Church and SPD” in the SPD district of Hanover.

Political career in the European Parliament

Bernd Lange ran for the first time in the European elections in 1994 on the list of the SPD for the European Parliament and was elected. During his first time in the European Parliament, he focused on the future of the automotive industry, cars and the environment, industrial, environmental and research policy, as well as Lower Saxony and the EU.

In the fourth parliamentary term (1994–1999) he was briefly a member of the Committee on Budgetary Control (July – September 1994), the Committee on Research, Technological Development and Energy (1994–1997), and a deputy member of the Committee on Environment , Public Health and Consumer Protection (1994–1999). After the 1999 election , Lange was again a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Policy and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Foreign Trade, Research and Energy.

In the 2004 European elections , Bernd Lange did not win a seat.

After being elected to the European Parliament in 2009 , he became a member of the Committee on International Trade and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy . After the 2014 European elections , the members of the Committee on International Trade elected him to chair their committee in July 2014. In the eighth legislature (2014–2019) he was a deputy member of the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy. Since September 2014, Lange has been the European Parliament's rapporteur for the trade agreement between the EU and the USA (TTIP).

In the European elections in 2019 Lange moved again to parliament. Lange is again a member of the Committee on International Trade , whose members again re-elected him as chairman. Furthermore, Lange is again a deputy member of the Committee for Industry, Research and Energy. Lange is also a member of the delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) . Since September 2019, Lange has been chairman of the cross-party Fair Trade working group in the European Parliament. He is also a member of the parliamentary Brexit steering group.

Prizes and awards

On February 24, 1999, he received the 1998 AA Award from the British Automobile Association for his involvement in European emissions legislation to improve air quality. In 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

The Parliament Magazine presented Lange the MEP Award in the retail sector in November 2011 .

In May 2016, the newspaper Politico also listed Bernd Lange as 15th among the most important MEPs.

In 2018, Lange was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.

Offices and mandates

From October 1999 to August 2005 he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Salzgitter AG . From August 2005 to June 2016 he was a member of the supervisory board of Peiner Träger GmbH . From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Chemicals Agency . From 2008 to 2011, Lange was a member of the supervisory board of Hannover Holding GmbH. He was a member of the administrative board of the Stadtsparkasse Burgdorf from 2006 to 2011. Until 2010 he was a member of the advisory board of the church service in the working world of the ev.-luth. Regional Church of Hanover. From 1988 to 1992 he was a youth lay judge at the Burgdorf District Court. From 1990 to 2004 he was a member of the board of the German Association for Civic Education of the Lower Saxony state group. Until 2004 he was a member of the board of trustees of the “IntEF-UAN” foundation of the Lower Saxony Association of Towns and Municipalities for the promotion of municipal wastewater partnerships . Lange has been a member of the advisory board of the German Environmental Foundation since 2010, and since 2010 he has also been a member of the advisory board of the Auto Club Europa . Lange is a member of the board of trustees of the anti-war building in Sievershausen . Since November 2011, Lange has been chairman of the EilersWerke - Mobile Welten Hannover association.

Since 2000 he has been one of the two chairmen of the “Automobiles und Gesellschaft” forum with Malcolm Harbor . In 2010 he was re-elected as co-chair of the forum.
