The German Environmental Foundation is a German foundation based in Berlin . With their contribution under the foundation motto “Hope through Action”, its more than 3,500 donors support initiatives in the field of practical environmental protection and the promotion of environmental awareness. It describes itself as unbound, politically and economically independent. It is one of the largest and oldest community foundations in Germany.

The organization was founded on March 31, 1982 in Mainz on the initiative of its long-time chairman Hans Günter Schumacher by 450 donors from science, politics, media and the environmental movement , including Erhard Eppler , Günter Grass , Bernhard Grzimek , Udo Simonis , Horst Stern and Ernst Ulrich von Weizsacker .

The foundation has had its headquarters in Germersheim since its establishment, in 2011 it moved to Guttenberg Castle in Haßmersheim , and in 2013 to Berlin to the House for Democracy and Human Rights . The foundation's work has been done on a voluntary basis since it was founded. The board consists of Jörg Sommer , Pierre Ibisch , Ute Vogt , Thea Uhlich, Lisa Zimmer and Hans Leo Bader.

The Foundation awards the book price environment Book of the Year and a journalism prize .
