House of Democracy and Human Rights

The House of Democracy and Human Rights is located on Greifswalder Strasse in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg .

The project house in the so-called Bötzowviertel houses over 70 humanist , left-liberal and left-radical organizations, including well-known NGOs .

history

The original "House of Democracy" at Friedrichstrasse 165 was handed over in December 1989 by the Central Round Table of the GDR from the SED party assets to the East German citizens' movements. Almost all independent groups and movements of the time of the fall moved into their offices there.

After a dispute about the unresolved ownership structure of the property that had been going on since the mid-1990s and after the decision of the party property commission against the use of the house by the political movements, the move to the twice as large, but somewhat more decentralized building in der took place in autumn 1999 Greifswalder Straße 4. In the context of the move and the addition of Amnesty International as the largest tenant, the name of the House of Democracy was changed to House of Democracy and Human Rights . While the Amnesty International Bundeszentrale now has a new address, the Amnesty International section of the Berlin-Brandenburg district and the East Regional Office are still located in the House of Democracy. In addition to the Berlin House of Democracy, there is a comparable house in Leipzig .
