The Tibet Initiative Germany e. V. ( TID ) is a non-profit association founded in 1989 with headquarters in Berlin . The TID advocates the right of self-determination of the Tibetan people and the protection of human rights in Tibet. There are 60 regional groups and contact points nationwide, in which around 2,000 members volunteer. The TID is one of the largest German-speaking Tibet support groups. She is a member of the International Tibet Support Network (head office London ).

Club history

The Tibet Initiative Deutschland eV was founded on August 8, 1989 on the occasion of the serious unrest in Tibet and the violent suppression of exiled Tibetans and German Tibet supporters in Bonn. The TID was founded as a grassroots movement and has since acted as a political advocacy group for Tibetans in Germany. One of its co-founders was the human rights activist Tsewang Norbu .

Working method and self-image

The TID is politically and religiously independent and has the status of non-profit. It is committed to inalienable human rights, democratic principles and non-violence. The association supports the Tibetans as politically and religiously persecuted. He advocates the right of Tibetans to self-determination in Tibet and supports the Tibetans in their non-violent struggle for the preservation of national identity, culture and spiritual and religious tradition. The TID uses peaceful means to influence the People's Republic of China so that arbitrariness, torture, and political and cultural oppression in Tibet can come to an end.

The Tibet Initiative Deutschland eV speaks to decision-makers from politics and business. The association is in contact with the Tibetan government in exile in India and their representatives in Europe. In order to draw attention to the Tibet problem, the TID organizes nationwide campaigns, demonstrations and vigils and organizes high-profile events. The TID regional groups and contact points organize film evenings, information events, panel discussions and political campaigns, for example.

The magazine Brennpunkt Tibet appears quarterly, reporting on news from Tibet, a changing focus topic and actions in Germany, as well as reviews Tibet-related films and literature. Special editions have been published on the subjects of “Tibet's past and present” (2007), “The Dalai Lama” (2008) and “Tibet in the Resistance” (2009).

Actions and campaigns

FREE ME campaign With the FREE ME campaign, the TID continuously supports political prisoners in Tibet. The TID informs about current cases, collects, etc. a. Signatures for their release and the improvement of prison conditions and organizes high-profile actions.

Show the flag for Tibet! The campaign “Show the flag for Tibet!” Has existed since 1996. Every year on March 10th, TID calls on counties, cities and municipalities to hoist the Tibetan flag on their town halls and public buildings. In doing so, they are strengthening the right of Tibetans to self-determination and speaking out against human rights violations in Tibet. The background to the campaign is March 10th - the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan people's uprising against the Chinese occupation forces. In 2014, the former mayor and President of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Henning Scherf , took over the patronage for the first time. The Vice-President of the German Bundestag Claudia Roth (Bündnis90 / DIE GRÜNEN), the Chinese dissident and writer Liao Yiwu, the actor Ralf Bauer and the singer Judith Holofernes also support the campaign.

GreenTibet.FreeTibet. With the environmental campaign GreenTibet.Free.Tibet, TID informs about the ongoing environmental degradation in Tibet and its consequences. Above all, the association advocates the rights of the Tibetan nomads who, according to plans by the Chinese government, are to be expelled from the grasslands by 2015. The TID demands the immediate stop of the forced settlement, the preservation of the nomadic culture and identity as well as a sustainable environmental policy and co-determination rights of Tibetans over their natural resources.

Finances

The Tibet Initiative Deutschland eV is mainly financed from membership fees and donations. In addition, the TID operates a Tibet online shop. The income from the shop flows directly into political work. The eV is a signatory of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative .
