Engineers without limits e. V. is a non-profit aid organization that carries out engineering projects in development cooperation. The registered association helps through knowledge transfer services to other aid organizations and those in need as well as on site with the implementation of specific aid projects. In addition, support and educational work come from Germany.

The association consists of active engineers from a wide variety of fields, architects and engineering students , as well as active members and supporters of other professions.

history

The association was founded in Marburg in 2003 to create a platform on which engineering projects can be implemented in development cooperation. A particular focus is on sustainable solutions and the exchange of knowledge with experts inside and outside the association. Today there are regional groups in 30 cities in Germany as well as five competence groups and over 2500 sponsoring members. The association regularly conducts training courses and workshops on development cooperation topics for members and interested parties, in which the principles of sustainable development work are presented using practical examples from the projects.

organization

The association is organized in regional groups that are spread all over Germany. The supraregional office is located in Berlin in the House of Democracy and Human Rights , regional groups are in Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Bielefeld, Bochum, Braunschweig, Bremen, Darmstadt, Dresden, Frankfurt, Freiberg, Freiburg, Gießen, Hamburg, Hanover, Ilmenau, Jena , Kaiserslautern, Kassel, Cologne, Constance, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Munich, Munster, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Stuttgart and Ulm / Neu-Ulm. In addition, there are supraregional competence groups in the fields of renewable energies, water supply, bridge and building construction, sanitation and intercultural communication / ethnography.

Experts from the association work, among other things, as project managers within the framework of the technical relief organization , the United Nations environmental program and consulting companies.

The association is registered with the international association of Engineers without Borders international . Engineers and interested members of the association receive extensive support there due to the bundling of experience and skills from more than 40 countries.

Principles

The association supports people for whom the basic infrastructural needs are not provided or at risk due to need or poverty, regardless of their skin color, worldview or religion.

The association solves acute problems in the areas of water, sanitation and energy supply as well as bridge building and improves the living conditions of the people by securing the basic infrastructure . For the association, successful development cooperation means working with local partners to work out practical and professional solutions to existing problems and implement them as projects. Effective support means that a project is only successfully completed when people on site can continue it independently - help for self-help .

Projects

The association provides technical assistance primarily in the areas of water supply , sanitation, renewable energies and bridge and building construction. The partner countries are mainly located on the African, Asian and Latin American continents. At Engineers Without Borders, projects are supervised by project groups, which in turn belong to a regional group.

Projects are basically divided into four phases: preliminary inquiry, exploration, implementation and evaluation, with particular emphasis on exploration. The aim here is to examine the potential of the project in the respective project region together with a partner organization. In addition to the concrete planning of the projects, there is the absolute principle of helping people to help themselves . In order to do justice to this principle, care is taken when selecting the projects that the people in the partner country stand behind the work and contribute their part to the success of the project. For this purpose, projects are only geared towards needs that are registered by organizations or project groups from the partner countries, so no needs from engineers without borders are generated.
