Exploration
The exploration is the empirical examination of a territorial area for defined geoscientific properties such as type of terrain , tectonics or climate , and the generation and presentation of relevant data .
It is a kind of small-scale discovery because it prepares existing facts for information , but the expected results of an exploration are more precisely defined.
Historically, the term comes from the military reconnaissance and is used in the topological context with an area , especially in geography and geology . In geodesy , v. a. explore the stability of survey points and the line of sight between them.
In a more general sense, the word exploration is also used for research or for collecting and processing data and knowledge :
- In politics and science for probing opportunities for successful activities or projects , for which sociology also uses the term exploratory study ;
- in geology as preliminary exploration ( prospecting ) of possible deposits
- in civil engineering and soil science for soil investigations and soundings
- in geography to explore remote areas through expeditions , see also polar research
- in space travel for the investigation of distant celestial bodies through orbiters
- in rescue services for collecting detailed geographical information as well as about special dangers, own personnel or existing technology (also called situation assessment );
- In Freinet pedagogy , exploration is a form of learning carried out by students as part of a work project .
