discovery

Representation of the discovery of America by Columbus

According to Meyer's Konversationslexikon , a discovery is the discovery of what was already there but not yet known, for example a new country, a new celestial body, a new animal, plant or mineral species as well as new facts and laws in the field of the various natural sciences.

The discovery, like the contradicting invention , may be accidental or deliberate. Intentional discovery always requires an excellent talent for making observations, experiments or speculations, and possibly also a great spirit of enterprise (for example to discover a new country or continent). When it comes to the history of the earth's discovery - viewed from a western cultural perspective - especially since Christopher Columbus , one speaks of an age of discovery .
