The House of Democracy has existed since the beginning of 1990, the Association House of Democracy Leipzig eV was founded on December 19, 1990. According to the statutes, its tasks include the promotion of art and culture as well as education and upbringing. To this end, the association has developed an extensive program of events in recent years. The leasehold contract, which was signed with the city of Leipzig in 1999, obliges the association to renovate and maintain the listed building and to pay a lease.

History of the house

The Leipzig architect and town planner Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg (1851–1920) designed this building, which was conceived as a municipal orphanage. Construction began in 1901. After completion in 1903, 130 children as well as supervisory and nursing staff could move into the 682 m² built-up area. From 1928 to 1932 the building served as the apprentice home for the city of Leipzig. From 1932 to 1943 the house was used as a children's home and, in the meantime, as a military hospital in 1940.

Due to the destruction of the war, the property was left to decay and a plot of rubble was created. As a special construction measure for the building, which was up to 70 percent destroyed, the "Chemical Design and Engineering Office" began to build the house in 1952. Until moving out in 1982, only project engineers for construction and machine technology were employed in the house.

With resolution no. 181/80 of December 3, 1980 of the City Council of Leipzig, the subsequent use by the SED city management was confirmed. The house was reconstructed from the end of 1982 to October 1983 and then occupied. On January 2, 1990, representatives of the SED / PDS and the city officially handed over the house at Bernhard-Göring-Strasse 152 to representatives of local associations and political organizations. Working groups of the "round table" met here.
