The " Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East - EJJP Germany " is a Berlin association that advocates the immediate withdrawal of Israel from the Israeli-occupied territories and the dismantling of all Israeli settlements there . It is the German section of the " European Jews for a Just Peace " .

history

The "Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East" was founded on November 9, 2003 by Fanny-Michaela Reisin . On October 21, 2007 the organization was registered as an association.

Memberships

According to the articles of association (§ 3), legal persons or natural persons of "Jewish origin" can become members. A person of Jewish origin in the sense of the statutes is someone who has at least one Jewish parent or who has converted to Judaism. Exceptions can be made by unanimous board resolution. “Associations of Jewish persons who adhere to the same principles” as the association come into question as legal persons.

Positions and Activities

In a statement by the association, the members stress that they have “decided to answer the call of Palestinian civil society for an economic boycott. (Palestinian Civil Society Call for BDS) ". Economic pressure is the best way to "irritate those who benefit from the occupation of the Palestinian countries, from the discrimination against the Palestinians and from denying their rights of return."

The Israeli Jew and current (2019) chairwoman Iris Hefets complained in the taz that "most of the media in Germany ... in the Middle East conflict would spread the Israeli position". Other voices would be ignored. In an interview in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger , she emphasizes that Israelis have to speak to the Palestinians "at eye level". "Unfortunately, politics is also done with enemies, I'd rather have someone other than Hamas."

On September 28, 2010, the German group “Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East” and the British group “ Jews for Justice for Palestinians ” (JFJFP) organized an aid ship to the Gaza Strip. The ship was stopped in international waters by the Israeli military and towed into an Israeli port.

The group calls for the boycott of products from all over Israel and the return of all Palestinians:

"We join the Palestinian call to boycott Israeli products and call on Israel to comply with international law to end the occupation, to respect the equality of all its citizens and to recognize the right of Palestinian refugees to return."

- Jewish voice, November 25, 2011

At the Leipzig Book Fair 2015, the German section called for a “boycott of all pro-Israeli events” at the Leipzig Book Fair. Israel was the guest country of the book fair in 2015.

In 2016, the bank for social economy terminated the association's bank account . The background was that the association supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, BDS. In 2018, the bank initially revised this decision after the “Jewish Voice” declared that it “only supports the BDS campaign insofar as it is non-violent and does not question Israel's right to exist”. In June 2019, the Bank für Sozialwirtschaft closed the account again because, after renewed discussions, “a sufficiently clear demarcation from the BDS campaign is not possible” for the bank and the criticism of the BDS movement most recently, for example, through the Bundestag resolution of May 17, 2019 to the BDS campaign increased sharply.

Honors

In 2019 the association was honored with the Göttingen Peace Prize. The award was accompanied by public controversy over the group's relationship with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign. The University of Göttingen , the City of Göttingen and the Sparkasse Göttingen therefore withdrew their support. The award ceremony was accompanied by protests.

In the reason for the award ceremony, the jury stated: “In accordance with the Palestinians' right to self-determination, which has been enshrined in international law since 1947, the Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East advocates a balancing peace solution, which is also a prerequisite for the secured and unsafe existence of Israel. The Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East would like to work towards the Federal Government using its foreign political and economic weight in the European Union, in the United Nations and in the Middle East emphatically and unequivocally for a viable, sovereign State of Palestine on integrated sovereign territory and within a secure one To create borders and thus actively participate in the realization of a lasting peace that is viable for both nations.
