Pierre Ibisch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pierre Leonhard Ibisch (* 1967 in Flensburg ) is a German biologist and professor for "Nature Conservation" at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development , formerly Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences . From 2007 to 2009 he was dean of the “Forest and Environment” department (originally the forestry department ) and a member of the university's executive committee. Since 2009 he has been one of the university's first research professors. He is co-director of the Center for Econics and Ecosystem Management, which he co-founded.

Life

Pierre Ibisch grew up in Flensburg, where he graduated from high school in 1986. He then studied biology at the University of Bonn with the examination subjects botany, zoology and physics. From 1993 to 1996 he received his doctorate in Bonn with a thesis on the epiphytes Bolivia entitled Neotropical Epiphytendiversität - the example of Bolivia . He is a student of the botanist and macroecologist Wilhelm Barthlott .

In November 2002 he received the license to teach botany with an interdisciplinary work ( preservation of the plant diversity of the megadiversity country Bolivia. Problem analysis and assessment methods as well as preservation strategies and ecoregional models ). Ibisch worked in Bolivia, among other things, within the framework of GTZ projects and as an integrated specialist for the CIM - (1997–2003). He has been a professor in Eberswalde since 2004 .

meaning

His specialist areas of expertise are global (environmental) change and natural resource management (including the development of adaptation strategies, sustainable development and global change), nature conservation , biodiversity and forest ecology. For many years he was active in landscape ecological and nature conservation research in South America. Between 1991 and 2003 he lived and worked in Bolivia for nine years. a. as head of the science department, the nature conservation organization Fundación Amigos de la Naturaleza (FAN). Among other things, he dealt with biodiversity mapping and ecoregional nature conservation planning (e.g. in the Chiquitano dry forest or in the mountain rainforests of the Andean north-east slope). In 2003 he and Gonzalo Mérida published the book 'Biodiversidad - la riqueza de Bolivia' (2004 in English, 2nd edition 2008), which has become an important textbook in Bolivia. In the meantime he is not only active in Germany, but also with various projects worldwide. Together with an international college of the Roadless Initiative of the Society for Conservation Biology , he is working on the importance of roadless spaces in nature conservation. In the forest ecological context his working group works u. a. on the microclimate of forest ecosystems and the effectiveness of certification systems such as the Forest Stewardship Council .

A particular concern of Pierre Ibisch is adaptive management in nature conservation. He is a co-founder of the so-called MARISCO method. Pierre Ibisch devoted himself to botanical research and contributed to the discovery and description of a large number of new species. Its botanical author's abbreviation is "Ibisch".

In 2011 he founded the Center for Econics and Ecosystem Management together with Peter Hobson from Writtle College in England.

Ibisch takes a stance on social issues and a future direction of an ecologically sustainable policy that recognizes that humanity and its entire economy depends on the global ecosystem.

“To align yourself to borders means that there must be no taboos. Everything has to be put to the test, we may have to learn to let go of 'achievements' that we have cherished. The path to true sustainability requires a 'new ecological radicalism' in the sense of 'less old politics' and consistent alignment with the functionality of the ecosystems that support us. "

- Pierre Ibisch and Lars Schmidt, (2009)

“It is not just dangerous technological approaches such as geoengineering or climate manipulation that can cause us unmistakable environmental costs that future generations will have to pay. It is also dangerous if, in view of the undeniable gigantic threat posed by climate change, our societies' forgetfulness of ecosystems increases. It's not just about carbon. One should not carelessly join a carbonized view of the world budget if the crucial point is missing: the invention of the post-growth economy for our global society. Without a very strong slowdown in global population and consumption growth, all other innovations will be cosmetics or simply impossible. "

- Pierre Ibisch (2016)

He also makes regular public statements on questions of how to deal with forest fire, heat and drought-related forest damage and how to adapt forest management to climate change (see, among other things, the article in the FAZ The Future of Forests is at Stake or radio interviews, including naturalist Pierre Ibisch about forest dying - "We should really get queasy" or "How do we save the climate-saver forest?"). In the discussion, however, his standpoints on forest conversion also meet with criticism regarding the (financial) feasibility. Many critics find the demands too radical.

Since the 2017/2018 edition he has been co-editor of the Ecology Yearbook . In 2018, he co-edited the book Man in the Global Ecosystem - Introduction to Sustainable Development.

In terms of university politics, he argues for the right of universities of applied sciences to award doctorates in Germany. With Constance Engelfried he edited a book on the subject.

engagement

Pierre Ibisch is active as a speaker and in an advisory capacity in various committees. He was z. B. Member of the governing body of the Society for Conservation Biology - Europe Section . As a member of the scientific committee, he was also involved in the preparation and organization of the European Congress of Conservation Biology . He is Deputy Chairman of the German Environmental Foundation , Liaison Lecturer at the Heinrich Böll Foundation and a member of a DAAD selection committee . He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Natural Forest Academy .

Publications

Pierre Ibisch is (co-) author of around 500 writings in English, Spanish and German.

Discovered and named plant and animal species

Three plants (the bromeliad Puya ibischii R. Vásquez and the orchids Stelis ibischiorum Luer & R.Vásquez and Telipogon ibischii (R.Vásquez) NHWilliams & Dressler) and an animal species ( Oreobates ibischi (Reichle, Lötters & De la Riva, 2001)). He is co-author of the Madagascan flattail gecko Uroplatus henkeli Böhme & Ibisch. In addition, he himself described, mostly with other co-authors such as Roberto Vásquez in particular, many other plants that predominantly occur in Bolivia (especially bromeliads of the genera Bromelia , Fosterella , Pitcairnia , Puya ; also various orchids and vellozias such as Vellozia andina ).
