Uroplatus henkeli is a species from the genus of leaf- tailed geckos ( Uroplatus ) and occurs exclusively in the primary lowland rainforests of the Sambirano region in the northwest and the deciduous dry forests in western Madagascar . However, as the forests continue to be deforested, the natural habitat of these animals is gradually disappearing. The flat-tailed gecko isprotectedunder the Washington Convention on Endangered Species (WA II).

Way of life

Distribution area according to IUCN

Most of the day the solitary Uroplatus henkeli sit upside down at a height of 70 to 130 centimeters on the trunks of smaller trees, bushes or bamboo plants , where they are very well camouflaged due to their color. In the night they climb further up where they hunt insects. Some animals were found at a height of 5 meters. The animals can only be found on the ground to lay eggs. Endangered animals can change their color within seconds and utter a loud cry of distress with their mouths wide open.

reproduction

The females of this species usually lay two eggs, and clutches with four eggs have also been found. Over 90 days after laying eggs, the young hatch with a body length of six centimeters. Adult animals reach a head-trunk length of 12 to 16 centimeters and a total length of 25.5 centimeters.

Appearance

Uroplatus henkeli has an elongated, flattened head. With lateral skin fringes along the head, body and legs, these animals are well adapted in their shape to the color patterns of their base. The drawing is usually coarser in males than in females. Often the back is light in color with wavy lines of darker color. A white color with fine black dots and black horizontal stripes on the back is also possible.
