John Simpkins

John Simpkins (born June 27, 1862 in New Bedford , Massachusetts , †  March 27, 1898 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1898 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Simpkins attended Yarmouth public schools and then studied at Harvard University until 1885 . He became a member of the Republican Party and was President of the Republican Club of Massachusetts in 1892 and 1893 . He was a member of the Massachusetts Senate from 1890 to 1891 . He was also a member of the state executive committee of his party from 1892 to 1894.

In the congressional elections of 1894 Simpkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 13th  constituency of Massachusetts, where he succeeded Charles S. Randall on March 4, 1895 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on March 27, 1898 . He bequeathed his extensive library to the Yarmouth public school, which he attended in his youth.
