John B. Alley

John Bassett Alley (born January 7, 1817 in Lynn , Massachusetts , †  January 19, 1896 in West Newton , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1867 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Alley attended the public schools in his home country and then did an apprenticeship as a shoemaker, which he dropped out at the age of 19. In 1836 he moved to Cincinnati , Ohio . For the next two years he worked in the Mississippi freight business . He then returned to his birthplace, Lynn, where he again worked in the shoe industry. In 1847 he opened a leather goods store in Boston . At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1850 he was a member of the Lynn Parish Council. From 1847 to 1851 Alley was a member of the governor's advisory board ; in 1852 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate . A year later he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Massachusetts Constitution . He became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1858 , Alley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Timothy Davis on March 4, 1859 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1867 . Since 1863 he represented the fifth district of his state as the successor to Samuel Hooper . From 1861 to 1865, Alley was chairman of the Postal Committee. His time as a congressman was shaped by events before, during, and after the Civil War . Since 1865, the work of Congress has been shaped by tensions between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.

In 1866, Alley renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad . In 1886 he retired. He died on January 19, 1896 in West Newton.
