John K. Tarbox

John Kemble Tarbox (born May 6, 1838 in Lawrence , Essex County , Massachusetts , †  May 28, 1887 in Boston , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Tarbox had a good education and then worked in the newspaper business. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1860, he began to work in this profession. During the Civil War , he served as a first lieutenant in a Massachusetts infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1868, 1870, and 1871 ; In 1872 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1873 to 1874 he served as mayor of the city of Lawrence.

In the congressional election of 1874 , Tarbox was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Ebenezer R. Hoar on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . In 1882 and 1883, Tarbox was a town attorney in Lawrence. He then served from 1884 to 1887 as Insurance Commissioner for the State Government of Massachusetts. He died in Boston on May 28, 1887 and was buried in Lawrence.
