Theophilus Bradbury

Theophilus Bradbury (born November 13, 1739 in Newbury , Essex County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  September 6, 1803 in Newburyport , Massachusetts ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1795 and 1797 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Theophilus Bradbury grew up during the British colonial era. He attended Harvard College until 1757 and then worked as a teacher for some time. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Portland from 1761 in this profession. In 1764 he moved his residence and law firm to Newburyport. He embarked on a political career in the 1790s. Between 1791 and 1794 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate . He became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton .

In the congressional elections of 1794 Bradbury was elected to the US House of Representatives in the eleventh constituency of Massachusetts, where he succeeded Henry Dearborn on March 4, 1795 . After a re-election he could remain in Congress until his resignation on July 24, 1797 . This came after his appointment as a judge at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court . In 1798 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He held the office of judge until his death on September 6, 1803 in Newburyport.
