Jabez Upham

Jabez Upham (born August 23, 1764 in Brookfield , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  November 8, 1811 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1807 and 1810 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jabez Upham was the older brother of Congressman George B. Upham (1768-1848) and a cousin of Charles Wentworth Upham (1802-1875), who was also a member of Congress. He studied at Harvard University until 1785 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in the profession in Sturbridge . About Claremont he then returned to Brookfield, where he also practiced as a lawyer. Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s . Between 1804 and 1806 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1806 Upham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Seth Hastings on March 4, 1807 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his resignation in 1810 . In 1811 Upham was again a member of the state parliament. He died on November 8, 1811 in his hometown of Brookfield.
