Claremont is a city in the US state of New Hampshire . It is the only town in Sullivan County .
geography
The city is located on the Connecticut River , the western limit of the city is the Connecticut River, which is also the state border with Vermont . The Sugar River flows east of Claremont and flows into the Connecticut River.
history
Claremont was founded in 1762 by Governor Benning Wentworth as Claremint Castel . Since 1764 it has been an independent municipality (Town) and since 1947 it has city rights (City).
Textile, paper and machine factories settled on the Sugar River and used the gradient of the river to power their machines. This made the city a small industrial center in the region.
Between 1850 and 1880 the population was around 4,000. After 1880 it rose to over 7,000 inhabitants by 1905, due to the demand for more workers in the expanding industry.
Most of the historical buildings still preserved today date from these 25 years. So also the opera house and the town hall, which were both built around 1897.

On Interstate 91 , it takes approximately 5 minutes to reach Weathersfield . It takes about 30 minutes to reach Lebanon on Interstate 89 .
There is a train station in the city which is served by the Amtrak and offers direct connections to New York .
