history

St. Johannes Chapel Gernsdorf (built 1856)

Archaeological finds of slag from the La Tène period around 450 BC BC indicate iron smelting and thus a Celtic population and settlement southeast of today's town center. Between 700 and 900 AD, during the expansion period as a result of the Frankish conquest , the probable settlement of the present-day place began.

Around 1300 Gernsdorf was first mentioned in a document with the name Gernstorff . In 1306 and 1336 a Herman von Gernstorf appeared in documents as a witness. The place was also mentioned on December 6, 1350 in a document on castle loan money.

In 1452, the tax register of the church in Irmgarteichen listed income from Gernsdorf. In an appraisal register from 1461, 13 taxable persons were mentioned. Ten years later, Konrad von Bicken received hunting rights in the towns of Rudersdorf, Gernsdorf and Salchendorf. After the Lutheran denomination was introduced in 1533 and the Calvinist denomination in 1577 in the county of Nassau-Siegen , the then Calvinist pastor from Irmgarteichen complained in 1578 about the negligence of the Gernsdorf community. After several changes of denomination , Gernsdorf became Catholic again , initially in 1624, under the rule of Johann VIII zu Nassau-Siegen and, after the Peace of Westphalia was concluded in 1648, again . Between 1635 and 1637 the plague raged in Netpherland, and thus also in Gernsdorf.

A new chapel was built in 1814 because the old chapel, which was mentioned as dilapidated in 1561, was destroyed in a fire that destroyed a large part of the village. Only a few houses on the Bichelbach withstood the fire. In 1815 Gernsdorf became part of the Netphen office . In 1816 the rulership changed to Prussia . A new chapel was built in 1856 and a new elementary school in 1902. This was expanded in 1953. Between 1921 and 1923, a power grid was built and the connection to the Siegerland power station was established. In 1936 the volunteer fire brigade Gernsdorf was founded and replaced the compulsory fire brigade that had existed until then .

On February 1, 1945, seven people (three women and four children) were killed in a bomb attack. Three houses were completely destroyed and 15 other houses were badly damaged. In the final phase of the Second World War , on March 30, 1945 in Gernsdorf, six people (three women and three children) were killed by artillery fire. Numerous houses were damaged.

In 1948 construction began on the new Catholic Church of St. Johannes Evangelist in Gernsdorf. This was inaugurated in 1951. It is the first church in Siegerland to be built after the war. Until the construction of a water pipe in 1961, the town was supplied with water from wells.

Until the end of 1968 Gernsdorf was an independent municipality in the Netphen district. When the community was reformed on January 1, 1969, the place was incorporated into the large community of Wilnsdorf . In 1966, 1975 and 2017 the Gernsdorf Church was renovated and rebuilt. In 1983 the village community center and in 1987 the kindergarten and the new fire station were built.

Notes: Figures 1969 / from 1994 on December 31; 1991 March 31.

Originally only the heads of households , i.e. men liable to pay taxes or their widows, were mentioned in the tax registers of the Nassau rulership or the parishes. Therefore, the population figures for the information up to 1732 can be assumed to be significantly higher. Presumably, around 70 to 200 people lived in the place, with the exception of the period of the Thirty Years' War and the associated plague epidemic. From 1815, at the beginning of Prussian rule, the actual population figures are given.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Johannes Evangelist is a church building in Gernsdorf that characterizes the town. It was built shortly after the end of the Second World War, largely on the part of the population, and is considered the first post-war church to be built in Siegerland . The hall church has 18 pointed arched windows and a round window in the tower. The church has an organ made by the Stockmann brothers in 1966 and three bronze bells from 1957 as well as a monumental stucco depiction of the crucifixion of Christ from the time it was built.

School, culture and leisure

The Gernsdorf Catholic elementary school existed until 1986. This was merged with the Catholic primary school in Rudersdorf. A new building was built between the two places in the Rudersdorf district. In place of the old elementary school, the Catholic kindergarten St. Johannes and the new fire station were built in 1987. Gernsdorf has, among other things, a Catholic public library , a village community center and a sports field. There are several sports, social and cultural clubs in the village.

coat of arms

prehistory

During the first creation of the Gernsdorf website in December 1999, the website's webmasters looked for a sign of recognition for the community's website. Five years later, the Gernsdorf local coat of arms working group was founded by local residents.

The form, colors and elements of the new coat of arms were discussed under the patronage of the mayor . The results of these discussions formed the basis of today's coat of arms. The resulting draft of the Gernsdorf coat of arms has now been passed on to a professional heraldist and implemented by him.

To the coat of arms

Local coat of arms Gernsdorf

Each coat of arms element has its own meaning. So the people of Gernsdorf decided on the following elements:

  • Lion: The upper part of the coat of arms shows the golden Nassau lion on a blue background . Gernsdorf is located on the former territory of old Nassau.
  • Plow : The plow stands for agriculture. The Gernsdorf population lived from agriculture for centuries.
  • Häbe and Lohe : The Häbe and the Lohe stand for forestry. Hauberg is operated in Gernsdorf . Each family is allowed to cut wood in the Gernsdorfer Forest, depending on its share. ( Commons )
  • Orchid : The orchid stands for the nature reserve in Gernsdorf. Gernsdorf has had its own nature reserve for several years.
  • Colors of the coat of arms: Each coat of arms color has its own meaning. So the people of Gernsdorf decided on the following colors:
    • Golden lion on a blue background: Since Gernsdorf is located on the territory of old Nassau, the color combination was chosen based on the Nassau coat of arms.
    • Black coat of arms elements on a silver background: The lower part of the local coat of arms consists of the shield of the Knights von Kolbe, who once lived in Wilnsdorf, and is divided into silver and black.

Use of the coat of arms

The new local coat of arms of Gernsdorf serves the residents as a unique identification mark. It is made available free of charge to any resident, association or other organization.
