geography
The place is about eleven kilometers north of Haiger at the source of the Dill river , which later flows into the Lahn .
history
Offdilln was first mentioned in a document from August 16, 1355. The name Offdilln is derived from off der Dill - the uppermost village on the Dill. The origin of the place is represented by a charcoal burner settlement . Later mainly agriculture and hauberg economy were practiced here .
The old school was built in 1820. After long complaints, a new one was built in 1950/52. The school from 1952 went into the possession of the Evang in the 1980s. Parish and has been used as a community hall ever since. The first water pipes were laid in 1925. After the Second World War, all streets were gradually renovated, provided with sewers and water pipes and sealed with an asphalt surface. In 1989 the cemetery was expanded and a cemetery hall was added.
In 2005 the village of Offdilln celebrated its 650th anniversary. On this occasion, old traditions such as coal piles and historical farms were brought back to life in order to give the following generations an impression of earlier life in the village.
Territorial reform
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the previously independent municipality of Offdilln was incorporated into the city of Haiger on January 1, 1977 through the law to reorganize the Dill district, the districts of Gießen and Wetzlar and the city of Gießen . Culture and sights
Regular events
Hauberg is made annually in Offdilln . As in the other villages of the Upper Dill Valley and the Roßbach Valley, there is a Haubergsgenossenschaft. The legal basis of the Haubergs work goes back to the "Haubergordnung for the Dillkreis and the Oberwesterwaldkreis" of June 4, 1887. It says: "Hauberge within the meaning of this law are the properties in the districts of Dillbrecht , Fellerdilln , Ober - and Niederroßbach , Bergebersbach , Eibelshausen , Almonds , Offdilln, Rittershausen , Steinbrücken , Straßebersbach, Weidelbach and Korb , which currently belong to the Hauberg associations."
Townscape
Today the place still has a lot of old buildings, some of which have been extensively restored. However, a fire in the middle of the 19th century destroyed some of the historical building fabric. This is how today's “Neue Straße” emerged.
In addition to two still-preserved blacksmiths, the village has a Protestant church from 1777 and a renovated community bakery. The dill spring located on the district of Offdilln is elaborately designed. The well-known and widely visible Auerhahnhütte is also located in the district of Offdilln. The Duke Adolf von Nassau went hunting from this hut, which was built in 1856. Not far from the Auerhahnhütte, the duke shot his last grouse in the Offdilln area. At that time the capercaillie was at home around Offdilln and was a coveted hunting trophy.
Historic Hauberg
The "Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Offdilln" has created a historic Hauberg above the village. In it the visitor learns details about the Hauberg economy. The annual cycle in the Hauberg is shown and shows how the forest develops after clearing in the following years until it is designated as Hauberg again. There is also a kiln , reminiscent of the time when the Celts melted iron ore 2000 years ago, and a kiln . Once a year, a pile festival takes place in which a Koehler produces charcoal.

On May 1, 2011, an access path to the Rothaarsteig was opened by District Administrator Schuster. The path leads from the “Mühlenhof” along the young Dill , then through the village, through the “Historischen Hauberg”, over the Bocksborn to the Rothaarsteig. A total of 240 meters in altitude must be overcome.
