history

The castle belonged to the Lords of Wilnsdorf, mentioned for the first time in 1185, and was laid out in such a way that one could overlook the entire upper Heckenbachtal from it. In the first half of the year 1233, Konrad von Marburg had the castle and the village of Wilnsdorf completely destroyed in the heretic court because of inquisition offenses. In the Protestant church , which was built on the foundation walls of the castle terrace, the drawing of a place with a destroyed castle tower and the year 1233 indicates the destruction of Wilnsdorf. According to floor plans from the 18th century, a small church could have existed before the fire.

Measurements around the current church and the moats , which have been visible for a long time, suggest that the castle grounds are almost 1.2 hectares. The keep had a diameter of 7.65 m. In 1968 and 1969, in addition to the Protestant church, which has stood on the grounds of the former castle since 1913, excavations were carried out with the participation of the community of Wilnsdorf and the Protestant parish. Clues to the history of the castle were found. In addition to Burgstrasse and Kolbestrasse, the name Im Graben reminds of the former expansion of the castle. Parts of the moat could still be seen until the 1950s. In 1865 remains of the wall were still visible, which had disappeared 90 years later. Today there are only remains of a moat behind the house at Mainzer Strasse 14, formerly Mainzer Strasse 5.
