Earl R. Lewis

Earl Ramage Lewis (* 22. February 1887 in Richland Township , Ohio ; † 1. February 1956 in Wheeling , West Virginia ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . January 3, 1939 to January 3, 1941 and January 3, 1943 to January 3, 1949, he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 18th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Lewis was born in Richland Township. He attended schools there. In 1914 he joined the Jura -Studies at the Case Western Reserve University from. In the same year he was admitted to the bar. From then on he worked in his own law firm in St. Clairsville . From 1927 to 1928 he was a member of the State Senate for the first time . From 1931 to 1934 he sat again in the State Senate and was President pro Tempore during this time. He also served in leadership positions for the Republicans.

After serving in the Ohio Senate, Lewis was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 1938 . His renewed candidacy in 1940 was unsuccessful. He had to hand over his seat to his predecessor, Lawrence E. Imhoff . In 1942 he was able to recapture the seat. In 1948 he lost his seat for good, this time to Wayne Hays . After leaving the House, he returned to practice as a lawyer.

In 1956 Lewis died in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was buried in Union Cemetery in St. Clairsville.
