Mary Rose Oakar (born March 5, 1940 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1977 to 1993 she was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 20th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

In 1962 Oakar graduated from Ursuline College with a Bachelor of Arts . The Masters followed in 1966 at John Carroll University . Finally she taught at the Lourdes Academy, a Catholic high school for women. She taught at Cuyahoga County Community College from 1968 to 1975. From 1973 to 1976 she was a member of the Cleveland City Council.

In the 1976 congressional election , Oakar was elected as the representative of the 20th Congressional District to the US House of Representatives. She was the first Ohio Democratic politician in Congress. Over time, Oakar, who comes from a family of Arab origin, was sent to various committees and was able to strengthen her position in Congress. Through her membership in the committees, a lot of funds flowed into her hometown, which were used for urban renewal. From 1985 to 1989 she was Democratic Caucus Vice Chairwoman , thus a member of the leadership of the Democratic Party in Congress. In 1991/92 she was involved in the House banking scandal . The 20th congressional district was integrated into the 10th district in 1992, Oakar was able to prevail in the primary elections of their party, but ultimately had to surrender to the Republican Martin Hoke . She then withdrew from political business. In 2000 she returned to the political stage to become a member of the Ohio House of Representatives for a term . In 2002 she left this again.

Oakar is currently President of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ACD), which is involved in the fight against discrimination against Americans of Arab origin.
