Jacob Romeis (born December 1, 1835 in the Kingdom of Bavaria , †  March 8, 1904 in Toledo , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Romeis attended the public schools in his Bavarian homeland. In 1847 he came to Erie County , New York with his parents . In Buffalo he continued his school education. He later worked in shipping and the railroad. In 1856 he moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he later grew fruit. In 1874 and 1876 he was elected to the local council, of which he was president in 1877. From 1879 to 1885 he served as mayor of Toledo, Ohio. He was a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1884 Romeis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the tenth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Frank H. Hurd on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . In 1888 it was not confirmed. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Jacob Romeis worked in fruit growing near Toledo. He died there on March 8, 1904.

  1. According to sources, Romeis was born in a place called Weisenbach or Weißenbach. However, since there are several cities of this name that are eligible, the exact place of birth can no longer be determined.
