Emmett Tompkins (born September 1, 1853 in McConnelsville , Ohio , †  December 18, 1917 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1903 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Emmett Tompkins was the son of Congressman Cydnor B. Tompkins (1810-1862). In 1865 he came to Athens County . He attended the public schools of his respective homeland and then the Ohio University in Athens . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1875, he began to work in Athens in this profession. Between 1876 and 1877 he acted as the legal representative of this city; in 1879 he was a prosecutor in Athens County. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was Mayor of Athens from 1877 to 1879 and was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1886 to 1890 . In 1879, 1881 and 1883 he took part as a delegate at the regional party conventions in Ohio. From 1889 he lived in Columbus.

In the 1900 congressional election , Tompkins was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat John J. Lentz on March 4, 1901 . Until March 3, 1903, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Tompkins practiced again as a lawyer. From 1908 he was a curator at Ohio University . He died in Columbus on December 18, 1917.
