Jonathan Taylor Updegraff (* 13. May 1822 in Mount Pleasant , Jefferson County , Ohio , † the 30th November 1882 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . March 4, 1879 to his death he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 16th and 18th  congressional districts of the State of Ohio.

biography

Jonathan Updegraff was a descendant of Abraham Isack's op den Graeff , who belonged to the so-called " Original 13 ", the first closed group of German emigrants to America . Jonathan was born the son of David Updegraff, a Quaker minister, and the grandson of Nathan Updegraff , a delegate to Ohio's first Constitutional Convention in Mount Pleasant. There he attended school. He then studied medicine . In 1845 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania . He then worked as a doctor. During the American Civil War he served in the US Army . Between 1872 and 1873 Updegraff gained his first experience in politics, he served in the Ohio Senate . In 1872 he was also a member of the Electoral College . In 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention .

In 1878, Updegraff was first elected to the US House of Representatives for the 18th District of Ohio. In 1880 he was re-elected to the House in the 18th District . On November 30, 1882, during his second term in office, Updegraff died in his native city.
