Joyce Beatty

Joyce Beatty (born March 12, 1950 in Dayton , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 3, 2013, it is a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 3rd  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Beatty was born in Dayton. She studied Psychological Counseling at Central State University , where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . She received her Master of Science degree from Wright State University . She then did her PhD at the University of Cincinnati . She then served as Health and Human Services Director in Montgomery County, responsible for health issues and nurse training. In 2003 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Ohio Dominican University for her services in health care .

In 1999 Beatty was named a member of the Ohio House of Representatives to succeed her husband . In the elections in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006 she was confirmed in office with a clear majority. In 2004 she was a delegate for Ohio at the Democratic National Convention . In 2008 she was no longer allowed to run due to a term limit. During her last term of office she was elected group leader of the democratic minority group ( Minority leader ). Because of their work, but also because of the general upswing, the Democrats were able to hold the majority of seats in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2009.

After retiring from the Ohio House of Representatives, she served as Vice President of Ohio State University from 2008 to 2012 . Here she was responsible for public relations.

In the 2012 congressional election , Beatty ran as a candidate for the Democratic Party in the newly formed 3rd District of Ohio. The district is largely in and around Columbus . She was able to prevail with 67.78% of the vote clearly against the Republican Chris Long. The Libertarian and Green Party candidates got 3% and 2% of the vote, respectively. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, she can continue to exercise her office today. Your new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Beatty is married to Otto Beatty, Jr. You live in Columbus.
