Benjamin Franklin Welty (born August 9, 1870 in Bluffton , Ohio , †  October 23, 1962 in Dayton , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1917 and 1921 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Welty attended his homeland public schools and the Tri-State Normal College of Indiana . In 1894 he graduated from Ohio Northern University in Ada . He then studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1896, he began to work in this profession in Lima . Between 1897 and 1909 he was the legal representative for his hometown of Bluffton. During the Spanish-American War of 1898 he served as a common soldier in the American armed forces. He later served as a lieutenant colonel in the Ohio National Guard from 1908 to 1913. Welty served as the Allen County attorney from 1905 to 1910 ; from 1911 to 1913 he worked as a special counsel for the Attorney General of his home state. He then worked for the US Department of Justice until 1915 .

Politically, Welty was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1916 congressional election , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican J. Edward Russell on March 4, 1917 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1921 . World War I fell during his time in Congress . In addition, the 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified in 1919 and 1920 . It was about the ban on trade in alcoholic beverages and the nationwide introduction of women's suffrage .

Welty was not re-elected in 1920. Between 1921 and 1924 he worked for the Inland Waterways Association . Otherwise he practiced as a lawyer until 1951; then he retired. He died in Dayton on October 23, 1962 at the age of 92.
