Eliakim H. Moore

Eliakim Hastings Moore (born June 19, 1812 in Boylston , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  April 4, 1900 in Athens , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1817 Eliakim Moore moved with his parents first to Marietta and then to Athens County , Ohio. He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. In the evenings he acquired the knowledge necessary to become a civil engineer. From 1836 to 1846 he was a County Surveyor in Athens County. From 1846 to 1860 he was a district auditor there. He then headed the tax office in the Marietta Athens district from 1862 to 1866. In 1863 he founded the First National Bank of Athens , of which he was president until around 1895. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1868 Moore was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Tobias A. Plants on March 4, 1869 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1870, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 15th amendment was ratified .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Eliakim Moore worked in the railway business in Athens. He was also a curator at Ohio University . He died on April 4, 1900 in Athens, where he was also buried.
