Lucien J. Fenton

Lucien Jerome Fenton (born May 7, 1844 in Winchester , Adams County , Ohio , †  June 28, 1922 there ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lucien Fenton attended his homeland public schools, Lebanon Normal School and Ohio University in Athens . Between 1862 and 1865 he served in an Ohio infantry unit in the Union Army during the Civil War . Due to an injury, he retired from military service on May 29, 1865. At this point, however, the civil war was already over. Between 1865 and 1881 Fenton worked as a teacher; from 1881 to 1884 he was employed by the US Treasury Department in Washington, DC . He then returned to Ohio, where he founded Winchester Bank in 1884 . In 1892 he was appointed curator of Ohio University by Governor William McKinley . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . In June 1892 he was a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis .

In the congressional election of 1894 , Fenton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the tenth constituency of Ohio, where he succeeded Hezekiah S. Bundy on March 4, 1895 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . During this time the Spanish-American War fell . In 1898 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Lucien Fenton worked in Winchester in the banking industry. From 1912 to 1922 he was president of the local school committee. From 1918 until his death, he also chaired the Adams County school committee. He died on June 28, 1922 in Winchester, where he was also buried.
