William P. Cutler

William Parker Cutler (born July 12, 1812 in Warren , Ohio , † April 11, 1889 in Marietta , Ohio) was an American politician .

Life

William Parker Cutler was born in 1812 to the US politician Ephraim Cutler . His grandfather Manasseh Cutler represented Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives. In 1829 Cutler enrolled at Ohio University in Athens . However, an illness forced him to give up his studies and he then worked on his parents' farm.

In 1840 Cutler helped William Henry Harrison in his presidential campaign for the United States Whig Party and was nominated for the Ohio House of Representatives in 1842 , but lost the election to George M. Woodbridge . Also in 1844 he was nominated and elected to the House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 1845 and again in 1846. In the same year he was also elected Speaker of the House by a caucus of his party .

In 1848 Cutler should run for election to governor of Ohio, but the Whig Party decided to support Seabury Ford , which later also won the election. In the same year Cutler ran in the Congress elections, but lost to the Democrat William A. Whittlesey . In 1849 Cutler was elected to the constituent assembly of Washington County that was to reform the Ohio Constitution in 1850.

Cutler was elected as a Republican candidate in the 37th Congress of the United States (1861-1863) in the early 1860s, but was unable to win re-election in 1862.

Cutler had been married since 1849 and had one daughter. The couple's three sons and two daughters had died in early childhood.
