Martin Leonard Sweeney (born April 15, 1885 in Cleveland , Ohio , † May 1, 1960 ibid) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . November 3, 1931 to January 3, 1943 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 20th  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Martin Sweeney was born and raised in Cleveland. He also attended the public schools there. Before he became politically active, he was u. a. active as a seller. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1913 to 1914 . In 1914 he graduated from Cleveland State University with a law degree . He was admitted to the bar that same year and began practicing in Cleveland. Sweeney served as a judge for the City of Cleveland from 1924 to 1932. In 1932 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago .

In a special election in 1931, Sweeney was elected to the US House of Representatives to complete the tenure of the late Charles A. Mooney . In the subsequent regular elections, he defended his seat. In the internal party primaries for the 1942 congressional election , he had to surrender to his successor Michael A. Feighan . He then worked again as a lawyer.

In 1960 Sweeney died in the city of his birth. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery .
