Gibson Atherton

Gibson Atherton (born January 19, 1831 in Newark , Ohio ; †  November 10, 1887 there ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gibson Atherton attended Denison University in Granville and then studied at Miami University in Oxford until 1853 . In 1853 and 1854 he was a teacher at the Osceola Academy in Missouri . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1855, he began working in this profession in Newark. For 15 years he was also president of the local education committee. He was elected district attorney in Licking County in 1857, 1859, and 1861 . Between 1860 and 1864 he was Mayor of Newark City. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1863 he ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio Senate . Three years later, he applied for the post of appellate judge, also unsuccessfully. Atherton also served on Newark City Council for two years. In June 1876 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis , on which Samuel J. Tilden was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the congressional election of 1878 Atherton was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Ebenezer B. Finley on March 4, 1879 . After being re-elected in the 13th district, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he renounced another candidacy. That same year, Gibson Atherton served as a six-month judge on the Supreme Court of Ohio . After that he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on November 10, 1887 in Newark, where he was buried.
