Anthony E. Gonzalez (born September 18, 1984 in Cleveland , Ohio , United States ) is an American politician and former American football player. As a member of the Republican Party , he has held the 16th seat of the state of Ohio in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019. In the NFL Draft 2007 ( NFL 2007 ) he was selected in the first round by the Indianapolis Colts .

Life

His father came from Cuba and emigrated to the United States after Fidel Castro came to power ; he is now the head of Ferragon Corporation , a steel company . His mother is the daughter of a veteran of World War II .

He had attended elementary school in Avon Lake , Lorain County and graduated from Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. In American football he played in college with Santonio Holmes , Ted Ginn Jr. , Roy Hall and Troy Smith, among others .

After his athletic career, Gonzalez received a Master of Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business .

Gonzalez lives in Rocky River , Ohio with his wife, Elizabeth, and their son .

Athletic career

Gonzalez was selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 32nd player in the 2007 NFL Draft and was slot receiver with the Colts. He was one of three selected from the state of Ohio. In the first year he caught 37 passes for 576 yards and three touchdowns ; the next season he reached 57 passes for 664 yards and four touchdowns.

Together with Reggie Wayne Gonzalez came in 2009 instead of Marvin Harrison in the starting team, but injured his right knee at the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars and fell out for eight weeks and did not play in the regular team this season, but came on the Injured Reserve List .

Because Gonzalez was on the Injured Reserve List in the 2009 season, he lost his place on the regular team in 2010. In two games as a slot receiver, he only got five pass catches for 67 yards and no touchdown. In week eight, he injured his left leg against the Houston Texans and was placed on the Injured Reserve List for the remainder of the year.

In 2011 he only played eight games and was not given a pass. After that he became a free agent .

On March 17, 2012, he signed a contract with the New England Patriots and was released on May 29. Gonzalez then ended his athletic career and enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in September 2012 .

Political career

Republican Party member Gonzalez ran in the 16th Congressional District of Ohio in 2018 .

On November 6, 2018, he won the election with 57 percent of the vote. In less than a month after his election was announced, he raised over $ 525,000 , including donations from his former NFL teammate Peyton Manning and Jimmy Haslam , owner of the Cleveland Browns, as well as several other former NFL and college football players.

In the general election on November 6, 2018, Gonzalez won against former health care equipment seller Susan Moran Palmer. He is the first Latino to represent Ohio in Congress.
