Chilton A. White

Chilton Allen White (born February 6, 1826 in Georgetown , Ohio , †  December 7, 1900 there ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1865 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Chilton White attended the public schools in his home country and then taught himself for a few years. He took part in the Mexican-American War as a soldier in the US armed forces . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1848, he began to work in Georgetown in this profession. Between 1852 and 1854 he was a prosecutor in the local Brown County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Ohio Senate in 1859 and 1860 .

In the congressional election of 1860 White was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William Howard on March 4, 1861 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1865 . These were overshadowed by the events of the civil war. In 1864 he was not re-elected. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, White practiced law again. In 1873 he was a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state; in 1896 he ran unsuccessfully for Secretary of State of Ohio. He died on December 7, 1900 in Georgetown, where he was also buried.
